Commander’s Chamber

The privileged commanders among the brethren monastic had their own chambers for themselves, most often a chamber and a room, to which a separate entrance led. The Teutonic Commander was the head of the house, the Teutonic Convent and the equivalent of the Commander in the Knights of St. John and the Knights Templar. Later, in addition to the monastic function, he also acquired an administrative function. The commanders were the heads of the provinces consisting of one or more castles and the adjacent territories. Among the Knights of St. John and Templars, such a province was called a Commander.
